The task of educating our children is one that ideally involves the entire community, especially including parents and the children themselves. Education has long been an integral part of the struggle for justice in Greensboro, and, as such, has been a focus of the BCC.
Our desire is to transform the current educational system into one that is accountable to parents and the community, respects parental involvement and rights, treats all children fairly, uses teaching approaches that honor diverse ways of learning, and incorporates multiple assessment methods. To reach these goals, we work to build and strengthen a base of parents, teachers and other committed community members to pursue an alternate vision for the education of children.
The BCC believes that strong parental and community participation, including young people themselves, is essential to crafting a quality public education system. In recent years BCC has provided active leadership in citywide efforts to fight the violence and other crime often associated with “gangs” and other street groups. Our is oriented toward better understanding the most marginalized parts of our youth and together with those youth and the larger community to devise ways to constructively engage them in being a productive part of the community’s future.
For example, for over 10 years the BCC convened the Community Dialogue on Education, every Tuesday, at 7:30 AM to discuss education in the county. The BCC has also hosted New Voices, a youth-led group that grew out of our truth and reconciliation efforts. In addition, BCC actively partners with other local, state, and national organizations to promote quality education for all children, especially those from marginalized groups and communities.
