Education has long been an integral part of the struggle for justice in Greensboro. Fighting the false framing of the choice between integration and Black separatism, the Beloved Community Center is seeking to transform the current education system into one that is accountable to parents and the community, respects parental involvement and rights, treats all children fairly, uses educational approaches which honor diverse ways of learning, and incorporates multiple assessment methods.
In order to reach these goals, we are building and strengthening a base of parents, teachers, and committed community members to forge and effectively pursue an alternative vision for the education of children.
1. The Community Dialogue on Education meets every Tuesday at 7:30am at the Beloved Community Center during the school year. This coalition provides a space and atmosphere for open dialogue between all parties, including parents, students, teachers, administrators, and community leaders. In addition to facilitating open dialogue, the CDE is focused on forging a post-industrial model of participatory education and on building positive relationships with Latinos and other ethnic groups, while maintaining the black/white unity that has evolved over the last several years.
2. New Voices is a youth-centered and youth-led group operated out of the Beloved Community Center. It is a space for young people who are dedicated to social change to gather and discuss current events and community awareness as well as act to transform their communities.

A delegation of fifteen young people from SEEDS (South Eastern Efforts Developing Sustainable Spaces) in Durham, North Carolina joined the BCC in working on its community garden. The young people, in the DIG (Durham Inner-City Gardeners) program, brought their experience and enthusiasm to the effort of creating garden beds. Working with Rev. Nelson Johnson and Wray Norwood of the BCC, the group was able to prepare the plot for planting and then join us for our weekly community meeting. Many thanks to these wonderful and powerful young people.
