Education has long been an integral part of the struggle for justice in Greensboro. Fighting the false framing of the choice between integration and Black separatism, the Beloved Community Center is seeking to transform the current education system into one that is accountable to parents and the community, respects parental involvement and rights, treats all children fairly, uses educational approaches which honor diverse ways of learning, and incorporates multiple assessment methods.
In order to reach these goals, we are building and strengthening a base of parents, teachers, and committed community members to forge and effectively pursue an alternative vision for the education of children.
1. The Community Dialogue on Education meets every Tuesday at 7:30am at the Beloved Community Center during the school year. This coalition provides a space and atmosphere for open dialogue between all parties, including parents, students, teachers, administrators, and community leaders. In addition to facilitating open dialogue, the CDE is focused on forging a post-industrial model of participatory education and on building positive relationships with Latinos and other ethnic groups, while maintaining the black/white unity that has evolved over the last several years.
2. New Voices is a youth-centered and youth-led group operated out of the Beloved Community Center. It is a space for young people who are dedicated to social change to gather and discuss current events and community awareness as well as act to transform their communities.

On Tuesday, October 21, 2008, New Voice Youth Group hosted their second intergenerational conversation. During the first conversation held in the month of September, the group discussed issues such as perceived generational gaps between elder and younger generations in the African-American community as well as education, economics, and community building.
The pertinence of the upcoming 2008 elections was the central focus of the second conversation. All were in agreement that the intergenerational dialogue must continue and that there is important community work that must be done now and post election time.
